What is Collagen good for?
Questions & Answers
As we get older we produce less collagen. From the age of 30 we start to lose collagen, our skin loses moisture, becomes thinner and wrinkles will start to appear.
Collagen is made up of amino acids and peptides which are strongly attached to one another by bonds. Hydrolysed collagen peptides have been prepared by enzymic hydrolysis (breakdown) of these bonds which leaves much smaller structures, called peptides. These have a much higher digestibility and absorption in the body making them easier for the body to utilise than taking collagen in its natural state.
The ingredients in the formula work in synergy together to help to contribute to normal collagen formation and help to maintain good skin. They may also contribute to the maintenance of bones, gums, the hair and nails.
Yes we only use a special branded form of Collagen, which is 100% natural, safe and free from any preservatives or additives. We are exceptionally careful to avoid the formation of undesirable substances such as free amino acids, Maillard reaction products or other hydrophilic compounds that are known to impair the quality of collagen.
By the use of water the large helices of collagen are broken down into smaller strands and then even further breakdown into small peptides and amino acids. This makes them cold water soluble and highly digestible, allowing 90% of them to be absorbed by the body within a few hours.
The collagen we use is a very high quality protein providing 18 amino acids. Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline represent around 50% of the total amino acid content; the glycine and proline concentration in our collagen is 10 to 20 times higher than in other proteins. As a result, our collagen offers health benefits that cannot be found in other protein sources.
We use Hydroxypropyl Methylcellose capsules which are plant based because some consumers don’t like to use gelatine capsules. Gelatine capsules are typically either pork or bovine derived and may not be suitable for certain religious groups. Also pescetarians (vegetarians who eat fish) can use vegan capsules.
